According to Chris Cahill, every year 50,000 firearms are imported into NZ, 20,000 of which are either stolen or are sold illegally to criminals.

Twenty thousand.

We would dearly love to see his source for those figures. According to an OIA response to our friends at SSANZ, 776 firearms were reported stolen in 2014-2015. So where did the supposed other 19,000 odd firearms come from?

Cahill’s agenda from literally his first day in the job has been clear. If he truly wants to engage in “meaningful dialogue” with us then he would do well to take a good hard look in the mirror. Although the media might fizz with excitement at his attempts to distort the truth, his outrageous rhetoric is causing nothing but damage to the relationship between Police and the firearm owners of NZ.

That should be a far bigger concern for Police than “how many guns one owner requires”.
