This guy will be out in 18 months.

“A Palmerston North man who stole a shotgun and other goods has got his sentence reduced on appeal…”

“He broke into a cabinet and took a shotgun, which has not been found…”

“… he received some good news on Tuesday, with High Court judge Justice Denis Clifford deciding the sentence should actually have been three years’ jail.”

The judges final comments were:

“These two burglaries, taken individually and together, would fall at the lower end of the scale of seriousness,” he said in his decision.

Apparently stealing a firearm, then likely selling it to another criminal, which is never retrieved “…would fall at the lower end of the scale of seriousness” according to our justice system.

So, where is the problem that the police are so concerned about coming from?
